The Gathering Place will be holding their 2nd annual "Community Illumination" Benefit on Friday, August 21, 2015, from 5:30pm-9pm at Central Venue on Carpenter St., Athens, Ohio.
The event has a duel purpose of promoting advocacy and awareness for the importance of mental health in our community and uses art as a vehicle to conduct outreach to our community about The Gathering Place’s programming and services. This year we are involved with an arts partnership with Paper Circle, an arts organization located in Nelsonville, Ohio. GP members, staff and artists will be creating paper luminaries to be exhibited at event as well as holding a live screen-print event with member designs on T-shirts and canvas bags. This partnership is part of a larger strategy to create an income stream for our organization by creating art products for future sales.
Our event will also include Voices of Poetry (poems written and recorded by our members on the theme of light and darkness being compared to their lives before and after treatment) set to dance pieces created by Athens Dance Collective members, we will also once again have our Gathering Place Band, “The Gatherers” open for a popular local community band in order to reach an even wider audience. This year our headliner is the Come on, Come ons.
